Chris
Donovan – Who ELSE is Giving to His Campaign? By Matthew Kauffman On June 8, 2012 · 3
Comments A devastating federal arrest warrant lays out
an alleged scheme to funnel illegal campaign contributions to Connecticut House
Speaker Chris Donovan, the endorsed Democratic candidate for the 5th District
Congressional seat. Multiple
stories in the Courant have the
details on tens of thousands of dollars allegedly accepted by the campaign’s
finance director, Robert Braddock Jr., in the belief it was cash coming
indirectly from businesses with an interest in a bill before the legislature.
Braddock is under arrest. Donovan waited days to step to the microphone.
And Connecticut
residents are left wondering how much might be for sale in state government.

When jobs
don't follow dollars - Connecticut Post
Bill Cummings, Investigative
Reporter
Updated 11:38 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2012
Connecticut has bestowed more than $500 million
on businesses in loans and tax credits over the last decade to create and
retain jobs, but many of the deals have not produced the promised jobs, and
penalties assessed by the state when goals are missed are usually small.
Hearst Connecticut Newspapers examined the 63
deals between companies and the state Department of Economic
and Community Development that have been in place long enough to be
independently audited.
Hearst found that 29 of the 63 failed to meet contractual
obligations to create or retain jobs. The study found that those companies,
which collectively received more than $86 million in loans or tax credits, were
penalized with a small fine, a slight reduction in tax credit or a minor
increase in loan interest rate.

Game over: Ex-Red Sox pitcher Curt
Schilling's company files for bankruptcy; feds investigate
Article by: ERIKA NIEDOWSKI and LAURA CRIMALDI , Associated Press
Updated: June 8, 2012 - 1:22 AM
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The
game is over for Former Boston
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's video gaming company.
38 Studios, lured to Rhode
Island with a $75 million state loan guarantee two
years ago, filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday, clearing the way for
liquidation. And federal authorities said they have begun an investigation into
the Providence-based company, though they didn't say why.
The filing by 38 Studios, which laid
off its staff last month, was made in U.S.
Bankruptcy Court in Delaware,
where the company is incorporated as a limited liability corporation. Its
sister operation in Baltimore
also filed for bankruptcy. The Rhode Island
company owes $150.7 million and listed its assets at
$21.7 million, according to court filings. 38 Studios Baltimore owes more than $121.4 million and
has assets of more than $335,000, the filings show.
In both filings, the company lists its biggest liability as
$115.9 million in debt from bonds backed by the state, interest on the bonds
and fees to Rhode Island.

State Auditors Cite $225000
Screw-Up In Compensating 'Survivor ... Jon Lender Government Watch
Hartford Courant The Office of State Treasurer Denise Nappier
issued a $225,000 check to a Fairfield man as his half of a $450,000 workers'
compensation settlement related to his wife's continuing disability stemming
from a 1996 work-related injury. But there was a problem: It was illegal to
write him the check while his wife is still living, because a spouse can only
paid as a "survivor" of a person who dies of such an injury, the
state's auditors of public accounts, John Geragosian
and Robert Ward, said in a report last week. Nappier's
office paid the full $450,000 under a "stipulated agreement,"
approved by the state Workers' Compensation Commission, for Debra Coleman, who
is eligible for the compensation because of the determination that she has a
disability from a traumatic brain injury suffered in a 1996 fall at Yale
University, where she then worked as an architect. The auditors said the
treasurer's office ran afoul of the law when it went along with the terms of
the agreement to split the total into two settlements of $225,000 each: one for
the disabled wife and one for her husband, Bruce Graham. Continue reading this

Editorial: Some Sunlight Would Be Nice June 8, 2012
New York Times - This has been a bad
week for Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York, and the way he and his staff have
handled it only made it worse. On Tuesday, The Times reported that a committee that Mr. Cuomo had organized to help him
fight entrenched Albany
interests had received a handsome donation from gambling concerns just before
Mr. Cuomo announced his proposal for a constitutional amendment to allow casino
gambling. His spokesman, Richard Bamberger, sputtered: “To try to suggest an
improper relationship between the governor and gaming interests is to distort
the facts in a malicious or reckless manner.” (For the record, it’s gambling.
Gaming is a lame euphemism.) The governor’s staff members said Mr. Cuomo had
been working on the casino announcement well before $2.4 million in donations
were made. It was not a terribly persuasive argument, but it fell apart in a
day, when The Wall Street Journal reported that Mr. Cuomo attended a big fund-raiser — in October — at
which representatives of one of those generous companies, the Malaysian firm Genting, presented Mr. Cuomo with a proposal to create a
big convention center and casino in Queens.
